私がCOMME des GARCONSのファッションショーの選曲をする為にパリを訪れたのは1981年のことでした。 1977年から始めたコレクションへの選曲は1997年まで続き、通算すると50回以上の選曲を担当したことになります。 川久保玲さんのコレクションへの選曲は、大変な名誉でしたが、同時に責任の重い仕事でした。 そのパリ滞在中に、友人を通して知り合ったのがパリ在住のファッション・デザイナー入江末男さんでした。 私は年上の彼を入江くんと呼びますが、それは、入江さんの友人たちが親愛を込めてそう呼んでいたからです。 そして早40年近い月日が経ちました。その間、私の家族を含め、IRIEくんからは、言葉にならない優しさを繰り返し受け取っています。 その感謝の思いが「IRIE’S ART COLLECTION」へ繋がったのです。

今回紹介する作品は彼の膨大なコレクションのほんの一部ですが、すべて、これまでIRIEくんが知りあった友人たちの交流の中でのコレクションです。 つまりIRIEくんのコレクションは彼の人生そのものなのです。 これこそが本当の意味でのプライベート・アート・コレクションと呼ぶものだと私は思います。

さて、今回のパリでの取材は、COMME des GARCONSへの選曲の時代の緊張感とは大きく異なり、 パリの街の持つ芳醇な文化にあらためて虜になりました。 そして偶然にもパリ滞在中に私を目覚めさせる出来事がありました。 それはファッション界の巨人、カール・ラガーフェルドの死去のニュースでした。 その知らせは一瞬にしてパリの街を沈黙させましたが、しばらくすると彼の写真が次々とパリのショーウインドウに飾られ始めました。 それはパリからの彼へのリスペクトであり、そのリスペクトで再びパリは輝きを取り戻したのです。パリは愛について教えてくれます。 愛はロマンスだけではなく、パリに住むアーティストたちが生み出す文化への愛でもあります。 それは今まで私が経験したことのない美しい愛の姿でした。

世界で一番優しい入江くんと、世界で一番美しいパリに感謝を込めて、この特集を贈ります。

The first COMME des GARCONS Paris Fashion Show I worked on was in 1981.
I had selected music for the collection itself from 1977, and annually until 1997, adding up to a total of 50 shows. Selecting music for Kawakubo-san’s collection was an absolute honor, but at the same time, I remember feeling a heavy amount of pressure and responsibility.
During that time I met Paris-based fashion designer Irie Sueo through a mutual friend. Even though he is older and someone I look up to sincerely, I have always called him by his nickname, “Irie-kun”. I’ve known him for 40 years now. He has been incredibly kind to my family and circle of friends as well. To express my gratitude, I wanted to share with you a glimpse into IRIE’S ART COLLECTION.
Although I’ll only be able to introduce a part of it here, this is a memoir of all of his collaborations and life work. I honor it as his private art collections.

Speaking of Paris, contrary to the nervousness I felt in the previous trips,
the trip I took this year made me embrace the rich culture of Paris. It gifted me a precious realization.
During my trip, the fashion hero, Karl Lagerfeld passed away. The news turned the town dark and quiet, but then candle lights twinkled around Paris, and his pictures appeared on Paris windows. Paris showed warm respect, and with that, the city got its sparkle back. Paris has taught me about love-that it isn’t just limited to romance, but that it can be an admiration for an artist’s world and culture. The way I felt on that day was nothing like I had felt before.

I am grateful for Irie-kun for being the kindest, and the glimmering city of Paris for reminding me that emotion and heart-to-heart connection. This edition is dedicated to Irie-kun and Paris.
