子供の頃からディズニーのアニメの中の風景が好きで、アメリカに行った。 らその風景のような世界があるんじゃないかと思っていました。いつかそんな風景があるアメリカで生活がしてみたいと思いながらいつの間にか35年くらい経ってしまいました。
桑原さんがディレクションされた「シブヤ・アロープロジェクト」で制作した自分の絵にたいする選曲で、ブライアン・イーノの「Like I Was A Spec ・tator」をお送りしたら、桑原さんからはそのアンサーとして、トーキング・ヘッズ の「This Must Be The Place」が送られてきました。
「アメリカン・ユートピア」は、子供の頃からアメリカに想いを馳せていた」 僕にとって、想いのままのタイトルだと思っていたけども、そのユートピアとはぜんぜん違うアメリカの現実の姿が現れていました。その映画自体が、 アメリカン・ユートピアのようにも思えました。
憧れていたアメリカに行けずにいまもこの町でウロウロしているけれども、デイヴィッド・バーンの音楽は、いま自分のいるココで地に足をつけて生きること、その希望を与えてくれました。どんな理不尽な世界の中であっても、 だからこそ、歌い、踊ること。This must be the place！

Since I was a kid, I was attracted to the landscapes in the Disney’s animated films and believed such a world actually existed in “America” I always dreamed of living in “America” surrounded by such landscape -es, but 35 years have already passed without the dream come true.
For a mural I painted for Shibuya Arrow Project directed by Moichi Kuwahara, I selected a piece of music, “Like I Was A Spectator” by Brian Eno. In reply to that, Mr. Kuwahara sent to me “This Must Be The Place” by Talking Heads.
I took the title “American Utopia” literally, as “America” was the very place I had longed for since I was little. But the film depicts a reality far from what I had dreamed of. Furthermore, it appeared the film was an “American utopia” by itself.
Although I couldn’t go to “America” and I am still in my hometown, the music of David Byrne gave me a hope to stay grounded and live in the place where I am. No matter how unreasonable the world may be, sing and dance all the more. This must be the place!
